New Year Traditions

Every year my mom serves us ham, collards, black-eyed peas and cornbread on New Years day. According to legend, this combo should bring us wealth, money, prosperity, gold! Has it worked? Maybe. Mostly it just taste great!

If you are looking for any slight edge in 2023 and want to give it a go, try these lucky dishes to attract abundance and prosperity in the coming year.

What to Eat on New Year's Day for good luck in 2023:

Peas or beans : They symbolize coins or wealth. The tradition is black-eyed peas, lentils or beans seasoned with pork, ham or sausage.

Greens for money: boiled cabbage or sauerkraut, collard greens, kale, chard, mustard greens, turnip greens or other green, leafy vegetables to make for good fortune in 2023!

Pork is considered a sign of prosperity in some cultures because pigs root forward.

Cornbread symbolizes gold.

In other cultures, fish, grapes, and ring-shaped cakes or doughnuts or cakes with special treats inside symbolize luck.

What NOT to Eat on New Year's Day:

Chicken or Lobster

Lobster should be avoided because they move backwards and it symbolizes setting your year back. Same thing for chicken, they scratch backwards and don't fly so your luck could fly away.

Good House Keeping has put together a great list of even more things you can do like what to wear and things to do to make 2023 your best year yet! See them here.
